INTRODUCTION
Phonetics is not taught as a subject at the under graduate (UG) or post graduate (PG) level in most universities in West Bengal. At some universities it is taught as a paper of Communicative English which is a part of the Career Oriented Programmes. Books in this subject are also rare. Hence, an attempt has been made to help the students of Communicative English in particular and people in general who want to have some serious knowledge of English phonetics. This book will also help UG and PG students.
An attempt is also being made to bring out a CD to help learners get acquainted to the sounds of English Received Pronunciation (R.P.). Later, an attempt will be made to develop an e-content on this subject which will be available for any one whoever is interested in learning this subject.
This book is the result of over forty years of work by the author. The author was first introduced to the subject when he was doing his MA (English) at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. The language laboratory of the Central Institute of English & Foreign Languages (CIEFL) which is presently known as English & Foreign Languages University (EFLU) was housed in the NEHU administrative building. This laboratory was extensively used by students of NEHU. Later, the author attended a number of courses on Phonetics & Phonology at CIEFL (presently EFLU) and also workshops at IIT (Guwahati). During the Post Graduate Diploma in the Teaching of English (PGDTE) the author took special interest
in this subject.
The book initially started as class notes, which was later developed into a book. Initially it was planned to name the book as A Textbook of Phonetics but as an afterthought it was renamed as A Textbook of Phonetics & Phonology as a portion on phonology was inserted.
