Alumnews - January & February 2020

Dear Friends,

It is heartening to see the energy that is emanating from the educational campuses across the country, moving into the streets. There seems to be something churning, in peaceful protests. Even as we celebrate the Republic (res publica/ rule by the public) with such a magnificent preamble that offers ‘freedom, equality and justice’ to every person in the country, these awakenings are a sign that the younger generation is asking the right questions as to the nature and texture of a ‘republic’ and a ‘democracy’.

Only when individuals, especially the young adults begin to think through the options ahead and the roads to be taken, that, truly a nation – as a people – comes to itself. Let us hope and wish that as in earlier age, now too, the upcoming generation of leaders will live up to the promise made by the founding fathers of the constitution.

Don Bosco was asked in 1867: “how will you overcome all the problems you face?” He answered, “through the politics of the Father.” God as Father/Mother is the source of “life and freedom”. Taking young people above the narrow confines of barriers and boundaries to ‘a kingdom where all are equal, cheerful, and have ample opportunities’ was the dream he strove relentlessly to fulfill. Isn’t it worth walking such a Dream, even today?

Warmly, wishing in advance a Happy Feast of St John Bosco,

Fr George Thadathil sdb
Principal
